What Causes Hip Pain? Symptoms and Common Triggers
Hip pain can disrupt your quality of life, affecting everything from exercising to simple tasks like walking, sitting and sleeping. It can take the fun out of your day by limiting your mobility and shifting your focus to your pain.
Simply put – hip pain steals your ability to do the things you enjoy most in life.
Common Causes of Hip Pain and How To Identify Them
There can be many underlying reasons for your hip pain. Pinpointing the exact cause is the key to finding successful treatments. The most common causes of hip pain include:
- Arthritis
- Bursitis (inflammation of fluid filled sacs around the joint)
- Hip Fracture
- Tendinitis (inflammation of the tendons)
- Muscle or Tendon Strain
- Hip Labral Tear (tears in the cartilage)
- Nerve impingement
Signs and Symptoms of Hip Pain
You might experience hip pain ranging from stiffness and discomfort to sharp, stabbing sensations. It may be a constant pain or it may be throbbing. It’s possible to have periods of being pain free, even with chronic pain.
One of the most common symptoms is a reduced range of motion accompanied by stiffness, limping or joint pain. You may feel hip pain in areas outside of your hips even though it’s originating from a hip condition. Your chronic pain can range from mild to severe and be felt in your thigh, groin, buttocks or lower back.
Each person is different and experiences pain in different ways. Chronic hip pain does not affect everyone the same. And that’s why we focus on finding your specific cause and designing a personalized treatment plan that works for your pain.
When Hip Pain Becomes Chronic
When your hip pain lasts for three months or longer, it is classified as chronic. Chronic hip pain can be more difficult to treat and requires a combination of interventions to address. Whether your pain is caused by arthritis, fractures or another condition, prompt care is key.
Is It Time To See a Chronic Hip Pain Specialist? Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Hip pain is a signal from your body that something is wrong. Ignoring hip pain can lead to even more serious medical issues, so it’s important to see a doctor for evaluation.
Warning Signs That Require Medical Attention
See emergency care if you experience any of the following:
- Severe pain that is intense and debilitating, especially if it comes on suddenly
- Inability to move your leg or hip
- Swelling or redness around the hip, which may indicate an infection or inflammation
- Visual deformity of the joint from misalignment to misshapen
- Hip pain accompanied by fever or chills
- Numbness or loss of sensation in your hip or leg

- Persistent pain that lasts more than a week, even with rest and home remedies
- Pain that interferes with your daily activities, such as walking, sleeping or sitting
- Pain that worsens at night

- Limited range of motion in your hip
- Weakness or instability in your legs
- Clicking or popping sound from your hip as you move
How a Hip Pain Specialist Can Help You Find Lasting Relief
Why should you visit a hip pain specialist instead of your primary care doctor or an orthopedic surgeon?
Our pain specialists deal with only pain every day. We offer many solutions that can help you avoid surgery. This gives them a wide breadth of experience in addition to their highly specialized training. HPM pain specialists also provide:
- Access to Cutting-Edge Treatments
- Minimally Invasive Approaches
- Expert Care Tailored To You
- Short Wait Times
- Local Access In Your Community
Comprehensive Diagnosis: Finding the Root Cause of Your Hip Pain
Our pain specialists want to hear your story. This, along with advanced testing and imaging, can help to pinpoint the root cause. HPM strives to address the true cause of your pain, not just treat the symptoms.
The first step to that is an accurate diagnosis.
Comprehensive Physical Examination
Our hip pain specialists will take a comprehensive health history and conduct a physical examination to assess your range of motion, strength and tenderness.
They will ask about the history of your hip pain and how it is interfering in your day to day activities. You will also be asked about any home remedies you have already tried and what’s helping compared to what is not.
Advanced Diagnostic Testing and Imaging
To determine the root cause of your pain, your doctor may order imaging to get a better look at the hip joint. This may include standard x-rays, MRI or CT scan. The type of imaging will depend on exactly what the doctor wants to see, whether it be the bones themselves or the bones along with the surrounding soft tissues.
In some cases, your doctor may recommend a joint aspiration or a biopsy. A joint aspiration involves removing fluid from the joint for testing. If a biopsy is needed, your pain management specialist will take a small sample of tissue to send to the lab for further evaluation.
Identifying the Root Cause of Hip Pain
Finding the root cause of your hip pain helps ensure that your treatment is targeted and effective, whether it’s the result of arthritis, a tear or another condition. Our pain specialists use various diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact case and create a treatment plan specifically for you.
Minimally Invasive Hip Pain Treatments at HPM
At HPM, we focus on minimally invasive treatments to provide long-term pain relief with fewer risks and faster recovery times compared to traditional surgery. These treatments are designed to target the source of your pain, so you don’t have to rely on medications or long recovery periods.
Targeted Treatment Options for Effective Hip Pain Relief
Steroid Injections: Targeted Pain Relief for Hip Pain Inflammation
Corticosteroid injections are a non-surgical treatment to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief. The injections reduce swelling, stiffness and pain, allowing you to return to your daily activities with minimal downtime.
Benefits:
- Fast relief of inflammation and pain
- Reduce the need for oral pain medications
- Minimally invasive with little downtime
Ideal for:
Individuals with hip pain due to arthritis, tendinitis or inflammatory conditions.
Nerve Blocks: Interrupting Pain Signals for Quick Relief
Nerve blocks work by injecting an anesthetic (numbing medication) or anti-inflammatory medication directly into the nerves that transmit pain signals to your brain. When the signals are blocked, you can experience near immediate pain relief. Additionally, nerve blocks can even be used to pinpoint the cause of your pain.
Benefits:
- Provides immediate pain relief
- Can help identify the specific nerve responsible for the pain
- Non-surgical
- Minimal side effects and recovery time
Ideal for:
Patients with chronic pain from nerve related issues like sciatica and impingement.
Trigger Point Injections: Addressing Muscle Pain at the Source
Trigger point injections are targeted to relieve pain due to tight and knotted muscles in the hip area. Injecting a local anesthetic or steroid into the muscle can relieve tension, allowing your muscles to relax and reduce your pain.
Benefits:
- Provides targeted relief for muscle related pain
- Can break the cycle of muscle spasms
- Quick procedure with minimal discomfort
Ideal for:
Those with hip pain from muscle tightness, spasms or joint overuse.
Radiofrequency Ablation: Long Lasting Pain Relief for Chronic Hip Conditions
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a cutting-edge minimally invasive treatment that uses heat energy to target and interrupt the nerves that carry pain signals. By interrupting the pain signal, RFA can provide long term relief for conditions like arthritis, labral tears and nerve impingement.
Benefits:
- Long lasting pain relief
- Minimal downtime
- Targets pain at the source
Ideal for:
Patients with chronic hip pain conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments
Personalized Hip Pain Relief Plans
Your personalized treatment plan may include over the counter pain relievers, physical therapy and prescription medications. If your weight may be contributing to your hip pain, our doctors may suggest weight loss and exercise plans to improve the health of your body as a whole.
Ongoing Support and Care
We treat our patients with the same care and support we would treat our own loved ones. Hip pain can be debilitating and we want to help you regain your freedom. When under our care, you will generally have regularly scheduled appointments with one of our specialists.
During each appointment, we will evaluate your current pain level, how treatments are working and update your treatment plan to ensure the best pain relief possible.
Managing Hip Pain at Home
Sometimes you need relief before you are able to get in to see your provider. The following techniques and remedies can help you manage your pain at home until your appointment. Many of these strategies can also be used between your appointments with approval by your doctor.
In addition to the pain treatments we prescribe to you in our clinic, you can also help your hip pain to improve faster by using some of the following techniques at home. These options are a good first step, especially if the pain is mild.
RICE: Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate
Rest
Do not push through your pain. Rest when needed, but also move around as much as possible so your joints don’t stiffen from lack of movement. These movements may include simple things such as walking from your bedroom to the kitchen.
Ice
Apply ice to the area. Be sure not to apply an ice pack for more than 10 minutes at a time. You can do this several times a day.
The ice should not sit directly on your skin. Wrap it in a light towel or cloth. If you begin to feel numbness, remove the ice.
Compress
While the hip is not the easiest to wrap at home, compression bandages can be useful in stabilizing your joint. Ensure the dressing is not too tight and don’t wear it while you are sleeping. Your physical therapist can show you the best compression techniques to help the most with the pain you are experiencing.
Elevate
When you lie down, place a pillow under your buttocks or hip area. This can help to drain fluid and reduce any swelling. You should only do this if it’s comfortable. If it causes additional pain, stop immediately.
Lifestyle Modifications
Lifestyle modifications can range from weight loss strategies to gentle stretching exercises. A healthy diet is a benefit to every person’s body, so it only makes sense to introduce this as a strategy when your body is trying to heal.
You can try light stretches or low impact activities that don’t aggravate your pain. Your pain doctor or physical therapist can give you a series of stretching exercises to perform at home. This can help to extend the benefits of your physical therapy between scheduled sessions.
Modify Your Activities
The “no pain, no gain” mantra is not what you should be following when you’re dealing with hip pain. If an activity causes your pain to increase, stop doing it.
As you’re recovering, you may find that you need help around the home or need a driver. You may find that a walker or cane is helpful when moving around. Adjust your activities as needed to provide your hip the opportunity to heal.
When Home Remedies Aren’t Enough
When your home remedies aren’t enough, it’s time to make an appointment with a pain management clinic near you. If conservative treatments at home aren’t working or your pain is getting worse, don’t hesitate to reach out to HPM to schedule an appointment for a proper evaluation and treatment plan.
