Do I Have to Be Referred by a Physician?

No. You can self-refer to HPM providers. Referrals are also welcome.

I Have Pain After a Procedure. Is This Normal?

It is not unusual for some patients to feel some pain after a procedure is performed. “Minimally invasive” refers to the fact that most of our procedures are performed percutaneously (through the skin). By using small needles, we minimize the risk of complications or infections. Each patient is unique and responds differently to procedures. Some patients feel worse before they feel better, while others feel better immediately.

Is Pain Management Covered by Insurance?

Clinical evaluations and procedures to treat pain are covered by most insurers. However, we will work with you and our hospital partners to evaluate each policy to determine whether you have appropriate coverage before treatment is given.

What Does a Treatment Plan Look Like?

Chronic pain is a complex process. After carefully listening to your pain story, we use a combination of treatments to achieve the best results. After completing a detailed history and a thorough physical exam, your pain management provider may order additional tests such as blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, etc. A treatment plan will be tailored to the individual patient but may include medications, minimally-invasive procedures, and/or physical therapy.

A pain management provider is a medical specialist that is trained to diagnose and treat acute and chronic pain conditions using a comprehensive, balanced approach. We are committed to excellent care that produces great outcomes.

Pain management is a comprehensive approach to diagnosing, treating, and controlling pain. It requires coordinating safe and effective options that can address the various aspects of pain: physical, emotional, social, and psychological.

When Should I See a Pain Management Specialist?

If you are experiencing chronic pain or pain lasting for more than 6 weeks, you should be evaluated so you can find proper treatment and relief. In general, the earlier you can be evaluated, the greater the diagnostic accuracy and faster time to relief. Of course, you’re welcome to call a nurse at any time.

Will I Be Asleep During Procedures?

Most minimally-invasive procedures performed are quick and relatively painless. While we require only local anesthesia, we do offer sedation services for most procedures. Before your treatment, your pain management provider will explain each step of the procedure, including any medications or anesthesia that you will receive and any necessary fasting or preparation.
